Gamescom 2023, one of the biggest gaming events of the year, kicked off with a bang on August 22 with the Opening Night Live showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley. The two-hour show featured a plethora of announcements, trailers, and gameplay footage from some of the most anticipated games coming soon. Here are some of the highlights of the show
New Announcements
Little Nightmares 3
The third installment of the creepy-cute platformer series was revealed with a trailer that showed off the new co-op feature, which allows players to journey through the game in local or online co-op. The game also has a podcast called The Sounds of Nightmares, which goes behind the scenes of the game’s production. Little Nightmares 3 is expected to release in 2024.
Black Myth: Wukong
The action-RPG from Chinese developer Game Science, inspired by Journey to the West, got a new trailer that showcased its stunning graphics, fluid combat, and diverse environments. The game is said to have a Soulsborne-like difficulty and a rich story based on Chinese mythology. Black Myth: Wukong does not have a release date yet.
Killing Floor 3
The third game in the zombie-shooting series was announced with a gory trailer that featured hordes of undead creatures, guns, explosions, and blood. The game promises to deliver more co-op action, weapons, enemies, and gore than ever before. Killing Floor 3 is slated for 2024.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty
The first major expansion for CD Projekt Red’s dystopian RPG got a new trailer that revealed its plot and protagonist. Players once again will take on the role of V, who is tasked with rescuing the NUS President from a rogue faction in Dogtown, a new district in Night City. The expansion will also introduce new abilities, weapons, enemies, and choices for players to explore.
Alan Wake 2
Remedy Entertainment’s long-awaited sequel to its cult classic thriller got a gameplay trailer that featured The Dark Place, the nightmare realm where Alan Wake is trapped. The trailer showed off some of the new mechanics and enemies that players will encounter as they try to escape from their own fears and stories. The game will also have a second playable character, Saga Anderson, an FBI agent who investigates a series of ritualistic murders in Bright Falls and Watery. Alan Wake 2 will be released on October 27, 2023.
Crimson Desert
Pearl Abyss’ open-world action game got a long gameplay trailer that showed off its impressive visuals, dynamic combat, and diverse activities. The game is set in a medieval fantasy world where players can explore, fight, craft, fish, fly, and more. Crimson Desert does not have a release date yet.
Rebel Moon
Not a video game but Zack Snyder’s Netflix epic got its first full trailer at gamescom, narrated by Anthony Hopkins, that showed off the sci-fi action and spectacle of the two-part film. The film is set in a galaxy where a peaceful colony is threatened by an evil tyrant and his army. Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire will be released on Netflix on December 22, 2023, and Part 2: The Scargiver will arrive on April 19, 2024
These were just some of the games that were shown at Opening Night Live. There were also updates on Mortal Kombat 1 and Diablo 4 Season 2. Gamescom 2023 will continue until August 26 with more showcases, interviews, and reveals from various developers and publishers.
