Black Myth: Wukong – A Stunning Action-RPG Inspired by Journey to the West

Black Myth: Wukong is an upcoming action-RPG developed by Game Science, a Chinese studio founded by former Tencent employees. The game is based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which tells the story of the Monkey King and his adventures with his companions. The game aims to deliver a faithful adaptation of the novel, while also adding its own twists and innovations.

Gameplay preview

The game was first revealed in 2020 with a 13-minute gameplay video that showcased the stunning graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5, the fluid combat system, and the various abilities and transformations of the protagonist. Since then, Game Science has released two more trailers, one in 2021 and one in 2023, each revealing more details about the game’s world, characters, enemies, and bosses.

First Hands on

A few days ago, Game Science held a large-scale hands-on event in Hangzhou China, inviting over one thousand players from all over the country to personally play the latest trial version of the game where some media outlets and influencers were also able to try out the game.

Combat

The 45-minute demo provided three different boss fights and a relatively complete chapter experience. The demo did not include the level-up system, but it gave players a set of skills and equipment that will be obtained in the mid-game of the final version. The skills include basic light and heavy attacks, three different stances (Smash Form, Pillar Form, and Thrust Form), spells (Immobilize, Stone Solid, Ring of Fire, and The Pluck of Many), and two transformations. The demo also featured some potions that can be used to heal or cure status effects.

Bosses

The first boss in the demo was Centipede Guai, which appeared in the first gameplay trailer. The second boss was Macaque Chief, which appeared in the snow mountain of the 2021 trailer. It challenged players to a duel on a frozen lake, where it used its staff and ice magic to strike and the third boss, not shown in any of the previous trailers. It was a giant scorpion-like creature and it used its venom to poison players.

Black Myth: Wukong is one of the most anticipated games from China, as it showcases the potential and ambition of Chinese developers to create high-quality games that can compete with international standards. Black Myth: Wukong is expected to launch in 2024 for PC and consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S).
