Red Dead Redemption is one of the most acclaimed video games of all time, a masterpiece of storytelling, gameplay, and atmosphere that captivated millions of players in 2010. For many fans, Red Dead Redemption is a game that deserves to be experienced again on modern platforms, with improved graphics, performance, and features. However, Rockstar Games, the developer and publisher of the game, has disappointed them with a lackluster port that does not live up to their expectations.
A pointless Rerelease
On August 17, 2023, Rockstar Games released Red Dead Redemption for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, more than a decade after its original launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The port was developed by Double Eleven, a studio that has worked on console versions of games like Minecraft Dungeons, Rust, and Lego Harry Potter. The port includes the base game and the Undead Nightmare expansion, but does not include any multiplayer modes or enhancements.
Price
The port costs $49.99 on both platforms, which is a steep price for a game that is essentially unchanged from its original version. The game runs at 1080p resolution on both PS4 and Switch, while the PS4 Pro and PS5 versions can support up to 4K resolution through backward compatibility. However, there are no improvements to the frame rate, textures, lighting, or animations.
Disappointed Fans
Many fans have expressed their frustration and disappointment with the port, especially after years of rumors and speculation about a possible remaster or remake of Red Dead Redemption. Some fans had hoped that Rockstar Games would deliver a similar treatment to this game as they did to its prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, which was released in 2018 with stunning graphics and gameplay enhancements.
Moreover, many fans have criticized Rockstar Games for not releasing Red Dead Redemption on PC or PlayStation 5, two platforms that have a large and loyal fan base. PC gamers have never had the chance to play the game natively on their platform, as the game was never ported to PC in the first place. PlayStation 5 gamers have also been left out of the port, as they can only play the game through backward compatibility with the PS4 version. Both PC and PS5 gamers have been hoping for a native version of Red Dead Redemption that would take advantage of their hardware capabilities and offer a smoother and more immersive experience.
Rockstar Games has not commented on the negative feedback from the fans or explained why they decided to release such a disappointing port of Red Dead. Some fans have speculated that Rockstar Games is focusing on developing Grand Theft Auto VI, which is rumored to be released in 2024 or 2025. Others have suggested that Rockstar Games is wary of remastering or remaking Red Dead Redemption after the disastrous launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition in 2021, which was widely criticized for its poor quality and numerous problems.
Whatever the reason may be, it seems that Rockstar Games has missed an opportunity to celebrate one of their most beloved games and please their loyal fans. Red Dead Redemption is a game that deserves better than a lazy and overpriced port that does not add anything new or improve anything old.
