Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake: What We Know So Far

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed game in the long-running franchise. Now, almost a decade later, rumors are circulating that Ubisoft is working on a remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. According to Kotaku, two anonymous sources claim that Ubisoft Singapore, the studio behind Skull and Bones, is involved in the remake’s development. However, the project is still in its early stages, and we probably won’t be hearing anything about it for several years.

Why would Ubisoft remake Assassin’s Creed Black Flag?

There are various possible reasons. Firstly, Black Flag sits as a high point for the series. Many fans would love to revisit it with improved graphics, gameplay, and features. Another might be is that Ubisoft is going through rough waters financially and doubling down on its blockbuster franchises. Remaking classic Assassin’s Creed games could be a lucrative strategy and regaining investor and the communities trust. The third and biggest reason is that Ubisoft Singapore is struggling with Skull and Bones, the game has been delayed multiple times. It was revealed in 2017, with many fans happy to see a spiritual successor to Black Flag. With subsequent reveals, the game appeared to have strayed almost completely off-course (pun intended). It had turned into an arcade/action game with no deeper game mechanics or narrative element. By most estimates, Skull and Bones is a sinking ship.

Improving an Old Classic

The remake would allow Ubisoft to tap into the clout of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and turn it into a proper pirate fantasy in a fully realized Caribbean. A more detailed open world for the current generation of consoles. Combining the revamped stealth from Unity and Syndicate for the boots on the ground sections. For the ship upgrades, the loot system from the newer RPG games would be ideal for this new game.

The narrative department can also be massively improved. In the old game, 70% of the time you were running around as a swash buckling pirate. Only in the last 30% was where the Assassins were a significant plot point. The remake can expand the involvement of the Assassins in its narrative, so the game can also live up to its Assassin’s Creed name. Other characters and plot lines, such as Edward’s relationship with his wife and son, and his encounters with historical figures like Blackbeard and Mary Reed could also be expanded on. The remake could also more closely tie in with the overarching lore of the First Civilization and the modern-day story-line.

Black Flag Remake Can Spin Off A New Series

Just like Shin Megumi Tensei gave rise to the Persona franchise, this remake could launch a new wave of Assassin’s Creed games. These games can center around the original mechanics while giving the fans a more pirate oriented gameplay. We’ll have RPGs such as Valhalla and we’ll have more stealth based games such as Black Flag.

This further allows Ubisoft to reinvent the Assassin’s Creed formula by introducing new mechanics and scenarios such as thievery and heists.

For now the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake is nothing but rumors so until official news, fans will have to wait patiently. In the meantime, they can still enjoy the original game.
