Soulframe is a new free-to-play open-world adventure game from Digital Extremes, the developers behind the popular sci-fi shooter Warframe. The game was announced during TennoCon 2022 and is being led by Steve Sinclair, the former director of Warframe who stepped down from his role to focus on this new project.
Long Awaited Reveal
Soulframe is inspired by Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke and other works that explore the themes of nature, restoration, and exploration. The game is set in a fantasy world called Alca, where the worldflesh is angry and the grounds shift throughout the day. Players will take on the role of Envoys, chosen ones who can wield the power of soul unbinding and awaken the ancient Ancestors
New Gameplay Direction
Soulframe’s gameplay will differ from Warframe’s in several ways. While Warframe is focused on fast-paced shooting and parkour, Soulframe will be more slow and heavy, with an emphasis on melee combat. The game will also feature procedurally generated environments, cooperative player-vs-environment missions, and a dynamic weather system that affects the gameplay. Soulframe will also have a unique art style that blends realistic graphics with stylized elements, creating a vibrant and immersive world.
Story
During TennoCon 2023, Digital Extremes revealed more details about Soulframe’s story, characters, and features. The main stage event started with a cinematic trailer that showed the Envoys arriving on the northern isle of Midrath, where they encounter various creatures and factions that inhabit Alca. The trailer also teased some of the mysteries and dangers that await the players in their journey. The event continued with a gameplay demo that showcased some of the core mechanics of Soulframe, such as soul unbinding, crafting, exploration, and combat. The demo also revealed some of the locations that players will visit in Alca, such as the voicing trees, the omen beasts, and the Silvern Seas.
Early Access
The reveal concluded with a surprise announcement: Soulframe will enter its closed beta phase in September 2023, and players who pre-order the TennoCon 2023 Digital Pack will get early access to it. The Digital Pack also includes exclusive in-game items such as a syandana, a rapier skin, a lotus floof, a sigil, a glyph display, and a Baro Relay Ticket.
